About Flathead Mesh Network

The Flathead Mesh Network (FMN) is a community-driven communication system designed to keep you connected across northwest Montana, even in remote back country areas. Powered by Meshtastic technology, FMN operates without internet or cellular service, relying on cost effective low-power radio devices. It’s ideal for hunters, hikers, emergency responders, and locals facing outages. This guide walks you through joining FMN and maximizing its benefits in the rugged Flathead Valley and beyond.

  • Mission: Build a reliable, off-grid network for safety and community resilience.
  • Power Reliability: Towers (Marion, Blacktail, Lonepine, Big Mountain) use grid power with robust battery and solar backups, ensuring uptime during storms or outages.
  • Community Focus: Open to all with compatible nodes—join the growing network!

What is Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is a free, open-source platform that turns affordable LoRa radio devices into a decentralized mesh network. Think of it as a modern walkie-talkie system that links multiple users over long distances without cell towers or Wi-Fi. FMN leverages Meshtastic to deliver text messages and location updates across the region.

  • How It Works: Devices (nodes) relay messages peer-to-peer, creating a self-sustaining network. Each node can act as a repeater, extending range.
  • No Internet Needed: Operates during power outages or in areas with no service, perfect for rural Montana.
  • Security: Messages stay local and are not tracked; optional AES-256 encryption protects private chats (used by banks and militaries).
  • Device Longevity: Low-power design offers weeks of battery life on a single charge, ideal for off-grid use.

What You Need to Join FMN

Getting started is affordable and straightforward. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Meshtastic App:
    • Free download on iOS/Android (App Store, Google Play).
    • Manages messages, signals, and node settings via Bluetooth.
    • Tip: Keep your app updated for the latest features (check monthly).
  • Node Device:
    • Options: RAKwireless WisBlock Mini Meshtastic Starter Kit ($30) or Heltec LoRa module ($30), both 915 MHz (U.S. standard).
    • Battery: 500mAh or 1200mAh (~$8–$12) for portability.
    • Case: Protective cover (~$5) to shield from weather.
    • Setup: Follow app instructions—plug in, join “FMN Public” channel, and go!
  • Optional Upgrades:
    • Antenna: 8 dBi (~$20–$50), mount 10–15 ft high (e.g., pole, tree) for 20–40 mile range. Height is might!
    • Power Bank: 10,000mAh (~$15) for multi-day trips.
    • Solar Panel: 10W (~$25) for long-term node operation.
  • Total Cost: ~$50–$100, depending on upgrades.
  • Where to Buy: Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, or https://store.rokland.com/.
  • Support: Check https://meshtastic.org/docs/getting-started for info on getting started or troubleshooting.

How FMN Works

FMN uses a network of “router nodes” on high-elevation towers (Marion, Blacktail, Lonepine, Big Mountain) and user-added “client nodes” to create a mesh. These nodes talk to each other and to your device, creating a mesh that passes messages along. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Router Nodes: Fixed towers relay messages across the valley, powered by grid power (large generator backup) and robust battery and solar backups.
  • Client Nodes: Your portable devices join the mesh, extending coverage to remote spots.
  • Messages: Send texts (up to 200 characters) or share GPS locations. No voice or video—keep it short!
  • Range: 20–40 miles per hop, up to 80–160 miles with 4 hops, depending on terrain and height.
  • Off-Grid Strength: Runs independently of cell towers or Wi-Fi, thriving in outages or wilderness.
  • Setup: Turn on your node, open the app, select node role as "CLIENT" and send—simple as that!

FMN Coverage Areas

FMN blankets northwest Montana, from cities and towns to rural back country. Coverage varies with terrain (mountains, hills, trees), so test with the app. Here are the details:

  • Full Coverage (Strong Signal, 80–100%, 1–2 Hops):
    • Marion, Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Bigfork, Somers, Lakeside, Kila, Creston, Evergreen.
    • Notes: Kalispell (90–100% from Blacktail/Lonepine), Whitefish (95–100% from Big Mountain).
  • Partial Coverage (Moderate Signal, 50–80%, 2–3 Hops):
    • Elmo, Polson, Troy, Olney.
    • Notes: Elmo/Polson (60–80% from Lonepine, partial obstruction by Mission Mountains), Troy (50–70% from Marion, Cabinet Mountains impact).
  • Potential Future Extensions:
    • Coram, Hungry Horse (85–95% from Desert Mountain).
    • Libby, Eureka (50–70% with Sheldon or Blue Mountain, 48.46 miles from Marion, relays needed).
    • Test Tip: Use !signal (in app) to check your spot—coverage may exceed maps in clear areas.

Getting Started - FMN Public Channel (or scan QR below to automatically join)

Join the FMN Public Channel to connect with the community. Here’s how:

**FMN recommends scanning QR code to join**

1. Connect to Node:

  • Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
  • Power on your node.
  • Open the Meshtastic app, tap Devices, and select your node to connect.

2. Set Region:

  • Go to Settings > Radio > Region and choose "United States" (915 MHz).

3. Configure FMN Public Channel:

  • Tap Settings > Radio Configuration > Channels.
  • Select the Primary Channel (Channel 0).
  • Edit Name to "FMN" and leave PSK as "AQ==" (default).
  • Save and wait for the node to reboot (10–20 seconds).

4. Set Power and Mode:

  • Go to Settings > LoRa > Power and set RF Drive Power to +30 dBm (max for your region).
  • Go to Settings > Device > Device Role and select Client Mode to avoid routing.
  • Go to Settings > LoRa > Presets and ensure Modem Preset is LONG RANGE - SLOW.
  • Go to Settings > LoRa > MQTT and ensure it’s disabled (toggle off if on).

5. Test:

  • Send a test message (e.g., "Hello FMN") in the chat tab.

  • Usage: Share back country and hunting updates, emergency alerts, or greetings. Keep messages friendly and under 200 characters.
  • Rules: No spam or personal info. Admins monitor for safety—report issues to FMN admins.
  • Community Benefit: Open to all with FMN nodes, fostering collaboration.

Your Privacy with AES-256 Encryption

Privacy matters in Montana—FMN gives you control with optional AES-256 encryption.

  • What It Is: A military-grade code scrambles messages, readable only with the right key.
  • Public Channel: Towers (Marion, Blacktail, Lonepine, Big Mountain) use no encryption for simplicity.
  • Private Use: Enable on your node for secure chats:
    • App > Channels > Add private channel (e.g., “Family Chat”).
    • Turn on “Encryption,” create a secret key manually or use QR code PSK generator in app, share privately.
    • Test with a message in CLIENT mode.
  • Examples: Use for family hikes, hunter coordination, emergency teams, or private chats—create a custom channel with a unique key.
  • Note: Non-joined nodes can’t use FMN routers for private encrypted traffic unless they join ‘FMN Public’ and set up their own encrypted channel.”
  • Legal Note: "AES-256 encryption is fully compliant with FCC regulations for private use on unlicensed devices."
  • Why Use It: Protects sensitive plans or emergencies from outsiders. FMN encourages users to enable encryption for their private communications.
